IELTS Writing Task 2/ IELTS Essay Sample
Sample Answer 1:
It is irrefutable that international tourism has taken mammoth dimensions. In fact it
has become the backbone of many economies of the world. This situation has both
pros and cons. In my opinion, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
International tourism can have many benefits for individuals. The most important
benefit is that tourism provides regular employment for many local people who might
otherwise be unemployed. They can find work in restaurants or hotels, or with tourist
agencies as guides or drivers, for example, and earn regular wages. This, in turn,
means that they may be able to save money and improve their standard of living. The
second reason is that tourists spend money in the country and this allows local
businesses such as restaurants, bars and taxi companies to flourish. In turn, other
businesses, food suppliers or petrol stations, for instance, may be established in order
to provide services to support the companies which cater for tourists. In other words,
the whole economy of the region develops.
A third reason is that in order for tourists to be able to visit remote areas, roads,
airports and hotels have to be built and local people also benefit by being able to use
these new facilities. Furthermore, when communications improve, it becomes
possible for other industries to move into the area, bringing with them more
employment opportunities and increased prosperity. A final reason why I am in favour
of tourism is that visitors from outside bring fresh ideas and different ways of doing
things to the local community. Consequently, local people may learn from tourists.
Likewise, visitors learn about the local people and culture, and return home with a
deeper understanding of the host country.
On the other hand, that there are some problems associated with international
tourism. Firstly, there is the increasing crime rate. Some locals see tourists as easy
prey because, not only are they in unfamiliar territory and therefore less able to take
care of themselves, but also they carry visible items of wealth, such as cameras and
jewellery which can be disposed of quickly for a profit. Another major problem is
health. With greater mobility comes greater danger of spreading contagious diseases
around the world. Also to be considered is the natural environment, which can be
seriously threatened by too many visitors. Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, for example,
is in danger of being destroyed by tourists and there are plans to restrict visitors to
some of the more delicate coral reefs.
To put it in a nutshell, I pen down saying that international tourism has both
advantages and disadvantages. However, the advantages outweigh the
disadvantages.
Model Answer:
With the advancement of faster transportation system, especially air travel, people nowadays go to other countries for personal, business, recreational, official, health and educational purposes. The air travel is cheaper than the past and worldwide communication system, particularly Internet, has opened the doors of international tourism. An overwhelming number of tourists travel to different countries and this number is increasing every year. No doubt the international tourism is a very large industry and has many negative aspects. However I believe that the advantages it offers well exceed the demerits it has.
First, due to the global trade many companies have multiple offices in different geographical locations. Businessmen and office executives can these days visit other branch offices for their meeting, training and business needs. This opens the possibility of running a global business or working in a multinational company which has a huge positive impact on a country’s economy. International travel has made it possible for some medium entrepreneurs and business owners to expand their business opportunity beyond the border. For instance, a huge number of medium size importers nowadays from my country visit China and some European countries to personally explore the business opportunity there. They even get some business ideas by visiting these countries and can make arrangement to export locally made goods. This, in my opinion, is a great advantage that the international travel offers.
Second, people can go to a country where medical treatment is better than his own country. For instance, a large number of people visit developed countries each year for better treatment and this is a positive development that ensures quality healthcare for many people. Similarly people travel to other countries to enjoy their holidays and this is a great opportunity for learning about diverse cultural aspects. With the increasing international tourism industry people have better understanding of foreign cultures and it help reducing the gap among nations. This is an important aspect for maintaining world peace as more people travel and experience other cultures, more their misunderstanding about others reduces.
Finally, tourism industry has created a huge job opportunity and countries like Maldives, the Bahamas, Thailand, Indonesia, Anguilla, Aruba and Macau depends on this industry.
On the other hand, international tourism has some negative aspects that cannot be overlooked. Damage in bio-diversity, increasing environment damage, more garbage production, influence of foreign culture and threats of terrorism are some aspects that the booming international tourism industry creates. The amount of danger the air-fuel causes is an alarming issue for many environmentalists.
In conclusion, the massive international tourism industry and ever increasing international travels have some environmental, cultural and terrorism related issues. However the opportunity and potentiality it has already created far outweigh the disadvantages of it. I believe that in this era of globalization international travel is a timely demand that will increase with time.
Model Answer 3:
International tourism has brought enormous profit to many places. At the same time, there is concern about its impact on local inhabitants and the environment. Personally, I felt that the advantages of international tourism outweigh the disadvantages.
It is irrefutable that there are some problems associated with this industry. Firstly, developing of tourism influence not only living cost but also housing might increase significantly. As a result, it will put pressure on local resources. Secondly, tourism creates pollution and waste, it will disturb on local health. Another problem is the negative effects on the natural environment. For example, the beautiful beaches are spoiled by the building of hotels. Beside that local traditional and cultures may be endangered.
Nonetheless, international tourism can have many benefits for individuals. The most important benefit is that tourism provides regular employment for many local people. For example, they can find work in restaurants on hotels, or with tourists agencies as guides or drivers, and earning regular wages. It means that they maybe also to save money and improving their standard of living, so it will decrease local people burden from negative impact of international tourism. In other words, the whole economy of the region develops.
To put it in a nutshell, I pen down saying that international tourism might have some effects. However, its pros outweigh its cons. On balance, I am convinced that a tourism place who has a good planning not only giving lucks on economic growth and improving level of living, quality, and local system communities but also maintenance and raising of environment will be better.
Model Answer 4:
Of course, international tourism may have some chilling effects on social and environmental sections. To begin with, a huge number of inflows of tourists may cause a disturbance upon the lives of many local inhabitants. It is universally acknowledged that tourism is a manifestation of human desire for variety and exploration, as a consequence, some snooping and prying are inevitable, which in turn cause anxious of local residents. Moreover, vast touring population among countries may severely undermine the biodiversity and ecological equilibrium. The un-biodegradable garbage which left behind by tourists plus the consumption of mineral fuel during the journey put the environment of the destinations and beyond on the line.
Nevertheless, international tourism can spawn even greater boons on individual, communal, and social levels. First and foremost, it provides an opportunity for travelers to experience exotic culture in person. In my opinion, overseas travelling is a multiple sensory experience which tourists can see, hear, touch and even smell the things at the destination spots. This is far more interactive than just peering through a TV or screen of computer. In addition, international tourism substantially boosts the development of the regional economics. Take China as an example, in the past three decades, international tourism has brought about vast number of employment opportunities in sections like retail sales, hospitality and transportation, which in turn rockets the revenue of tax of the Chinese authority. Furthermore, the hands on experiences which gathered from oversea travelling has a positive impact on bettering the negative image of the destination country and in return benefits international understanding.
To conclude, I concede that international tourism has some negative impacts, but to say its merits far outweigh its demerits is also reasonable. On balance, I am convinced that while boosting the development of the international tourism, it is also necessary to encourage the interactions between tourists and local residents in which improving mutual understanding and respect and at the same time promote such touring as a more cultural and environmental sight seeing practice.
