Many people say that we have developed into a “throw-away” culture, because we are filling up our environment with so many plastic bags and rubbish that we cannot fully dispose of.
To what extent do you agree with this opinion and what measures can you recommend reducing this problem?

Sample Answer 1:
Environmentalists today are campaigning for “reduce, recycle and re-use” in a bid to save
the world, but we as a nation, have adopted “replace” as our mantra. This and many other
factors are leading to a throwaway society. In this essay, I shall discuss some steps that can
be taken to solve this problem.
To begin with, modern lifestyle has contributed greatly to the increasing amount of waste
and garbage we produce every day. In other words, we have turned into a materialistic and
mass-consumption society where we use more and throw away more than ever before.
Once new things are acquired, we dispose-off these “unwanted” things to second hand
shops or just in the trash cans. The solution lies in changing our attitude. We should get old
things repaired and try to use them as long as possible.
Secondly, the markets today are flooded with cheap, single-use-only things that are more in
demand than high priced quality items. Our houses and closets seem to be overflowing with
goods that are more in quantity and less in value. Then, there is too much packaging done
by the companies in a bid to make their things more attractive. Here too, the onus lies with
us. We should not buy things with excessive packaging. This will deter companies from
doing too much packaging. We can also bring our own personal shopping bags instead of
using plastic bags provided by stores and shops. Besides, the government can enforce
stricter laws on companies to use biodegradable packaging.
Furthermore, plastics, waste metal, glass can be recycled. Companies can also contribute by
developing new raw material which is recyclable and will ultimately lead to less garbage.
To put it in a nutshell, I pen down saying that, individuals, business and the government can
share the responsibility to reduce the amount of waste material and to save the earth. If we
do not take steps to tackle this problem on a war footing, our Earth will become un-
inhabitable.

It is true that the ever increasing waste produced from human activities is taking a heavy toll on the environment. In my opinion, the increasingly high consumption of goods and the contaminate industrial productions are two main factors contributing to this trend.
Nowadays, the rate at which daily necessities such as food, clothes and papers are consumed is dramatically rising due to the population boom. With people eating and using more, the amount of rubbish coming from the packaging of various commodities is exceeding the degrading capacity of our environment. What makes the situation worse is our tendency to use something once and throw it away. A typical example would be the one-off plastic bags with which consumers convey groceries from market to their home. The unrestricted use of these has resulted in the prevalence of plastic rubbish that cannot be thoroughly degraded.
Moreover, the intense industrial activities around the world are introducing more refuse to the environment. For instance, the poisonous metals such as lead and rotted steels deriving from the mass production of electrical devices and automobiles contribute largely to this problem. Additionally, most manufacturing methods utilized in production lines are not economic and clean. The poor availability of advanced recycling technology in industries leads to that recyclable materials such as plastic, concrete and ceramic are being randomly dumped all over the world. As it takes considerable long time for these to be digested by bacteria, the trend that industrial wastes are accumulating at an accelerating rate is difficult to stop.
In conclusion, a throw-away society is the result of the soaring amount of goods we need every day and the insufficiently regulated industrial activities. If proper measures are not taken promptly, this trend is likely to cause more serious problems to the environment and people’s lives.

Nowadays people produce more waste than ever, as they are accustom to a “throw-away” lifestyle. And it’s become worst as they generate wastes which are difficult to be disposed. I personally agree with the statement and the following essay will explain it in details.
To begin with, as the world economic has developed, people generate more waste each year. With the mass industrialization, costs of producing products such as plastic bottle or disposable diapers are getting lower than ever. As a result, lots of people prefer to use these kinds of products, as they believe that these items are more efficient and hygiene. However, they do not realize that these products have a catastrophic effect to the environment. It is very difficult to recycle these items, as it requires for more than a century to dispose them. Consequently, people require more landfills these days which will reduce the number of green areas.
However, to resolve the issue, we could change the habits of purchasing non-environmentally friendly products. For example, instead of buying mineral water that is packed in plastic bottle, we could use a glass bottle that can be repeatedly used. In terms of recycling, glass bottle is easier than the plastic one and safer for the human’s health as well. It has been reported that plastic bottles could cause cancers and other kinds of serious diseases. Another example would be to use a paper bag or a permanent bag as a substitution of plastic bags. By changing these kinds of lifestyle, it is hoped that we could reduce the number of non disposable waste in the area.
In conclusion, it is undeniable that people generate more waste these days, as they have a “throw-away” habit. And it gets worst, as many of the waste are non disposable. I strongly agree with the statement, and we should change this negative lifestyle immediately. We could start by changing our lifestyle from using disposable items to consuming a friendly environment one, and hoped that the number of waste would be reduced gradually.

It’s often said that our times see such a throw-away society that we are surrounded by rubbish. As far as I am concerned, this general belief is no exaggeration. When you visit a place of interest, you are sure to see everywhere plastic bags, sacks, drinks bottles, cans and other kinds of rubbish. Walk along the street on a windy day, and you are most likely to be pursued by flying white litter. As a matter of fact, this problem of pollution becomes increasingly serious that it is high time to take effective measures to deal with it.
First of all, people have to be taught the awareness of environment protection. One important reason why many people litter around is that they have a very slight, if any, idea of environment protection. They are indifferent to the issue because of their misconception that they are safeguarded against epidemic diseases and other pollution-relevant hazards as long as their home environment is clean and safe. Only when they learn the importance of environment protection can they possibly get rid of their harmful habits of littering around.
Secondly, the use of plastic bags and other similar kinds of wrapping materials should be curbed. We can restore the tradition of taking a basket when going to the bazaar for food. Moreover, the plastic boxes used as the fast food container can be replaced with paper ones, which are easier to be disposed of.
Last but not least, science and technology have great roles to play in the campaign of fighting pollution. Modern science and technology can empower us to cope with the increasing amount of rubbish and even to turn the waste into useful things.
These measures may not be everything in combating pollution, but they are certainly vital. By taking the measures we may expect to see a cleaner and safer environment.

Nowadays, waste disposal has been as severe as other environmental problems. I think that the abundant material wealth and consumers’ lavish lifestyle are definitely responsible for this.
In the past, suffering from the shortage of material supplies, people always cherished things they owned. This is no longer the case. Due to the rapid economic development, individuals are now surrounded by a wide and varied range of commodities. Moreover, people’s requirement for a better living standard gives the businesses incentives to manufacture a variety of consumer goods and disregard the potential impact on environment. As a result, the practice has produced enormous waste that is unable to be recycled and caused an environmental disaster.
Another important factor contributing to the phenomenon is that people are used to lead a lavish life and is unaware of the opportunities to reduce, reuse and recycle waste. For example, when new models of mobile phones appear on the market, many citizens are more prone to buy the new ones, rather than keeping the old ones, no matter whether the old ones are still usable. So that is why our communities are facing the particularly accumulated wastes.
In order to solve the problem, governments’ discerning intervention and guidance, such as making laws and encouraging eco-friendly economy, can make a difference. More importantly, manufacturing corporations should not only produce the essential goods to meet the demand, but undertake the social responsibility. Besides, citizens should adapt to lead a low carbon lifestyle. Only by doing so can we ensure that we can have an optimal win-win solution beneficial to environment and production.
